OFF-GRID OUTPOST

Lake of the Woods, Ontario

Uncle Mark’s Outpost

The outpost is a fully off-grid cabin located on lake of the woods. The site is accessible only by boat in the summer, or snowmobile in the winter. It offers world renowned fishing and hunting opportunities. The cabin is super-insulated, outfitted with solar, lithium batteries, and Starlink.

How it all started

Over the course of winter 2022, Joel assisted Jay Siemens, Mark Haber, Scott Green, and Spencer Caruso with the design of their project. Since the beginning, the goal of building a cabin that is fully off-grid was a priority. The orientation of the building, pitch of the roof, and even the size of the photovoltaic system was planned months in advance.

The Design

Because the project is located on a remote boat-only access island, everything needed to be thought out in advance. The 850sqft cabin was strategically designed so that every piece could fit on a small barge.

First Musky!

In Summer 2022, Joel along with two other friends, Dylan Gervais and Francois Barbe, travelled over 1,600km (18-hour drive) to help build the cabin. They spent 7 days on the island living in a houseboat. During this time, they helped with the construction of the pads, foundation, floor, and walls of the cabin. They also snuck in for some time to fish, where Joel caught not only his first, but second musky!
